Mr Riaz is delighted to have been selected to serve on the BFIRST committee for a tenure of 3 years, commencing 1st July 2017.

BFIRST is a UK registered charity which trains surgeons working in the poorest countries in the world to enable them to undertake reconstructive Plastic Surgery, releasing children and adults from the state of poverty and destitution associated with disability and deformity.

BFIRST was developed by BAPRAS’ Overseas Service and Training Committee, which for several years took care of the Association’s commitment to training in the poorest nations. It is still integrally associated with BAPRAS, but with separate legally defined articles, is now able to ring-fence donations and other support, in order that the clearly defined objectives of BFIRST can be fulfilled in a more sustainable way than when it was governed by the day-to-day operational management of BAPRAS.

Mr Riaz will be involved in helping to develop training programmes for plastic surgeons operating in the third world and advise on standard setting.  This fits in very well with his voluntary work in Pakistan with OPSA (Overseas Plastic Surgery Appeal) www.opsacharity.org.uk which he visits twice yearly to operate on babies and young children with cleft lip and palate conditions.

During these trips he always invites a trainee plastic surgeon who has a specific interest in such conditions, as such an opportunity is invaluable.
